    Community Forestry
    Conducting a street tree inventory

    Introduction

SWAT team member inspecting street tree. Photo by David Swaciak. This project offers alternative methods to inexpensively build a plan that will protect and enhance your community tree resources. Depending on your communities resources and eligibility, there are three different levels of involvement. The Community Forestry Program Work Team at Cornell will be available to help based on priority of need and availability of personnel. Go to "Details" under the category that best suits your needs. To find out how this method of tree inventory evolved, go the Street Tree Project History.

The Community Forestry Program Work Team is continuously evaluating and improving this project. We are currently investigating the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve tree location information. Watch for updates in the near future.

Student Weekend-Arborist Team (SWAT) - Within one weekend, trained horticulture and natural resource students perform an inventory of your community trees for a fee plus expenses

    • Time Frame - one weekend
    • Cost - less than $3,000.00
    • Benefits - useful for communities with 1000 to 2000 street trees, and/or with diverse list of tree species
    • Student team details

Volunteer inventory team - Work with volunteers from your community and train them to take the inventory using handheld computers.

    • Time Frame - variable depending on number of trees and volunteers.
    • Cost - less than $500.00 includes volunteer expenses (meals and refreshments). Equipment use fee or purchase may be more.
    • Benefits - useful for communities with fewer than 1000 street trees and with limited variety of tree species or communities updating existing inventories.
    • Volunteer team details

Your own staff - Prepare your own staff to conduct the inventory using your own equipment. Resources on these web pages will aid in the training and preparation.

    • Time frame - Plan on one day training/study to learn procedures, and 2-5 minutes per tree to do the inventory
    • Costs - staff wages, PDA - under $200 (Palm Pilot, Sony Clie'), Software - about $250 (Pendragon Forms)
    • Benefits - Work on your own time frame, may be easier to locate trees from database in the future if end user is entering location data.
