Horticulture 148 Plant Science
Cornell Univ.
Ithaca, NY 14853
Areas of Expertise: Extension responsibilities are concerned with vegetable crops grown on organic soils in New York, primarily onions and lettuce, and to a lesser extent, celery, carrots, sweet corn, and radishes. Specific projects in progress have the following goals; the reduction in subsidence of organic soils and better control of wind erosio; a more efficient usage of fertilizers; an understanding of the nature of nutritional problems associated with certain organic soils; the evaluation of onion varieties for New York growing conditions; wee control in muck vegetables and the techniques for establishment of optimum plant stands. Teachs Hort Science 225 (Vegetable Production) at Cornell and does graduate student advising.

Areas of Expertise: Research and extension efforts focus on development of cultural practices which promote the sustainability and economic viability of fresh market vegetable producers, while minimizing negative impacts of these systems on the natural resources of New York State. Current research interests include evaluation of composts and cover crops for nutrient value and disease biocontrol, examination of biological soil and seed treatments for improved crop growth and yield, development of production recommendations for alternative vegetable crops, and evaluation of vegetable cultivars and production practices for impact on plant nutritional value. Statewide specialist for Fresh Market Vegetable Production.

Horticultural Sciences 201 Hedrick Hall
NY Agricultural Experiment Station
Geneva, NY 14456
Areas of Expertise: Field research is designed to maintain and enhance profitability and sustainability of New York vegetable farmers both for short and long term, with emphasis on processing crops including sweet corn, snap beans, cabbage, beets, and peas. My short term projects are designed to provide growers with the best cultural methods to grow crops, i.e., fertility management; irrigation; optimizing plant populations; and variety selection. Long term projects include fine tuning cover crop use to maximize nutrient recycling; improving fertilizer recommendations through the use of quick nitrogen tests; determining how variety selection and fertility practices affect crop nutrition; and food safety issues as it relates to production practices (manure, compost, irrigation).
