Look for patterns in the field to help distinguish between excessive fertilizers, herbicide injury, or nutrient deficiency.
1) excessive fertilizer - rather uniform pattern of injury, appearing suddenly
- when ammonium fertilizers are applied just prior to wet, warm weather
- excessive chloride fertilizers
- excessive boron
2) herbicides - regular patterns in the field, such as the ends of rows where the sprayer turned or every fourth row where spray overlap occurred, etc.
3) nutrient deficiencies, such as potassium, magnesium or calcium - tend to follow soil type or drainage patterns
