The results of the vegetable variety evaluations conducted in 1998 are presented in this publication. The studies were conducted at the Homer C. Thompson Research Farm at Freeville, the New York, the East Ithaca Farm, Ithaca or on commercial vegetable farms, as indicated on the tables. The 1998 growing season can be classified as warmer in terms of temperature, especially in early spring and fall. The precipitation was higher in June than previous seasons but drier in late summer and fall. Weather data for the 1998 growing season are summarized in Table 7and Table 8.

The variety evaluations consisted of muskmelons and seedless watermlons on gravel soils. In addition to cultivar evluations, results of cultural practice experiments on artihokes, cabbage, butternut squash, sweet cornand biodegradable papermulch are included in this publication.
