About

History:

The 2nd National Conference on Facilitating Sustainable Agriculture Education was born out of the January 2006 conference, in Pacific Grove, California. Over 140 people attended, including students, faculty, staff and administrators from over fifty colleges and universities, and fifteen statewide and national sustainable agriculture organizations.

Based on post-conference evaluations the 2006 conference was a great success, exceeding expectations in both attendance and active participation. The two principal outcomes were:

  • a commitment to organize a second conference in 2007, and
  • the formation of a supporting professional association for the advancement of sustainable agriculture and agroecology in higher education.

2007 Goal:

To convene a national group of post-secondary sustainable agriculture teachers and learners in order to facilitate dialogue, build networks, and identify current and future educational programs and goals.

The Objectives:

In order for the 2007 conference to succeed in facilitating post-secondary sustainable agriculture education, broad stakeholder representation is necessary. To this end, students, educators, researchers, and administrators whose work directly intersects with post-secondary sustainable agriculture education are hereby identified as the primary stakeholders. Additional stakeholders include extension educators, farmers, processors, end-users (e.g., consumers, chefs, etc.), and others who would benefit from increased post-secondary educational opportunities for students who aim to advance the sustainability of the food system.

By convening broad stakeholder representation, participants will aim to:

  • further define a national strategy for the development of sustainable agriculture as an academic discipline that serves to meet defined education and training needs;
  • engage in the discussion and development of sustainable agriculture program content (e.g., designing interdisciplinary curriculum to best meet student, program and institution needs, assessing the impact and effectiveness of experiential learning, integrating the social and natural sciences to create a balanced and diversified curriculum, etc.); and,
  • build inter-institutional relationships between new and established programs to facilitate the progress and establishment of new sustainable agriculture programs.

Additionally, the conference itself will serve to inaugurate the professional association, the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association (SAEA), thereby facilitating the continuity, intention, promotion and support of sustainable agriculture education as an organized academic discipline.
